Thomas Søndergård to stand in for Sir Donald Runnicles

11 Feb 2021

Due to the current pandemic situation and the associated travel restrictions, Sir Donald Runnicles is unfortunately unable to conduct the Berliner Philharmoniker on 20 February 2021 as part of our online festival “The Golden Twenties”. Standing in for him, Thomas Søndergård will take to the conductor’s desk of the orchestra for the first time.

Currently music director of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Danish-born conductor has made guest appearances with numerous international orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is regarded as a specialist in the work of Jean Sibelius, and has included the composer’s Sixth Symphony on the programme of his debut concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker. You can find the complete concert programme in our concert calendar.
