Conductor Sakari Oramo takes over for ill Alan Gilbert

20 May 2021

Due to a Covid-19 infection, conductor Alan Gilbert has unfortunately had to cancel his participation in the livestream concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker on 5 June 2021.  Although he has since recovered well from his illness, he is not able to conduct the concert. Sakari Oramo will now conduct the concert in his place. Since his debut in May 2001, the Finnish principal conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and the BBC Symphony Orchestra has presented six different programmes with the Berliner Philharmoniker.

The programme of the concert has been partially changed. Unsuk Chin’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra with pianist Sunwook Kim as the soloist remains. The originally planned Piano Quartet No. 1 by Johannes Brahms (in the orchestration by Arnold Schoenberg) will however be replaced by Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2. Anton Webern’sIdyll for large orchestra Im Sommerwind will no longer be performed.
