In June 2018, Sir Simon Rattle appeared in the Philharmonie for the last time as chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker. The recording of the concert with Gustav Mahler’s Sixth Symphony was released on the Berliner Philharmoniker Recordings label. Now the jury of the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik (the German Record Critics’ Prize) has named the edition an “artistically outstanding new release” and added it to its “best of list 1/2019”.
The jury stated: “The lavishly produced luxury edition of the concert shows Rattle at the height of his powers. [...] Rattle forms Mahler’s jagged sound world in compelling proportions. It is characterised not by timeless beauty, but by cool virtuosity and drama, including the soulful singing of the orchestral in the Andante.”
