Two new DVDs with the Berliner Philharmoniker have now been released, both documenting highlights of the past season. The first is Puccini’s Tosca, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. In this classic opera, moments of love and intimacy alternate with those of jealousy, hatred and sadistic brutality at a breathtaking pace. All this is portrayed by Puccini’s musical language that has both beauty and psychological depth. The principal roles in this acclaimed production are sung by Kristine Opolais, Marcelo Álvarez and Marco Vratogna.
The second new release is the season finale from the Berlin Waldbühne, with Gustavo Dudamel conducting orchestral music from Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen – the perfect repertoire for this venue. Especially with such a dynamic conductor as Dudamel, pieces such as the Ride of the Valkyries develop an exhilarating power that reaches right to the back row of this vast auditorium. Like Wagner’s opera cycle, Robert Schumann’s Third Symphony takes the audience to the Rhine which inspired the composer’s vibrant, sonorous music.
Both DVDs are available at the Philharmonie shop.
