Music for the Queen

25 Jun 2015

A state banquet for the Queen without music? Unthinkable! So, the Office of the German Federal President came to the Berliner Philharmoniker for help. Without hesitating, five members of the orchestra who come from British sovereign territory countries came together to form the Commonwealth quintet and provided the musical entertainment: Between courses, horn players Sarah Willis and Fergus McWilliam, violinist Stanley Dodds, cellist Rachel Helleur and double bassist Matthew McDonald played movements from Beethoven’s E flat major Quintet and excerpts from Kurt Weill’s Threepenny Opera. The Queen was very pleased and, full of interest, asked the musicians questions – including how they travel by plane with musical instruments.
