Congratulations to Marlene Ito, who has won the audition for the position of first Principal of the second violins – the first woman in this position with the Berliner Philharmoniker. Marlene Ito has been a member of the orchestra’s second violins since 2011. In winning the audition, she succeeds Christian Stadelmann, who died in July 2019.
Marlene Ito was born in Yokohama (Japan) and grew up in Australia. After studying at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, she came to Germany in 2003 where she continued her education at the University of Music Lübeck (MHL) and the Berlin University of the Arts. From 2006 to 2008 she was a scholarship holder of the Karajan Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker and was taught there by the then first concertmaster Tōru Yasunaga. In 2009, she was offered her first appointment as second concertmaster at Berlin’s Komische Oper.
