Two major London concert halls, the Barbican Hall and the South Bank Centre, have taken the occasion of Sir Simon Rattle’s 60th birthday to invite the Berliner Philharmoniker and its chief conductor to a London Residency. In the Barbican Hall, Simon Rattle and the orchestra will present their celebrated Sibelius cycle which, in addition to the complete symphonies by the Finnish composer, also includes his violin concerto. The soloist is Leonidas Kavakos.
On two evenings at the South Bank Centre, they will perform Helmut Lachenmann's Tableau for orchestra and Mahler's Resurrection Symphony with Kate Royal (soprano), Magdalena Kožená (mezzo-soprano) and the London Symphony Chorus and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Chorus. The latter two works also form the programme of the subsequent guest appearances at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Philharmonie de Paris which opened in January 2015.
