Lang Lang forced to withdraw from concerts in November 2017 and April 2018

12 Oct 2017

Lang Lang very much regrets that he is forced to withdraw from his upcoming concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker in November 2017 and his solo recital in the Philharmonie in April 2018. He needs to allow additional time to recover fully from a tendinitis of his left arm.

We are grateful that the young Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho has agreed to step in for him for the concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker in Berlin and on tour in Frankfurt, Hong Kong and Seoul. He will play the Piano Concerto in G major by Maurice Ravel instead of Béla Bartók’s Second Piano Concerto, which was originally planned. We are also grateful to Yuja Wang, who will step in for the tour concerts in Guangzhou, Wuhan, Shanghai and Tokyo. The programme for these concerts remains unchanged.

Lang Lang’s recital in the Philharmonie on 9 April 2018 is cancelled and will not be rescheduled. Tickets which have already been purchased may be returned to the box office of the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation during normal opening hours. Tickets may also be returned to the box office by mail (Kartenbüro Stiftung Berliner Philharmoniker, Herbert-von-Karajan-Str. 1, 10785 Berlin); please include your bank information.

Two shooting stars

Pianist Seong-Jin Cho, born in Seoul in 1994, won third prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 2011, at the age of 17. Four years later he won the Chopin Competition in Warsaw, thus opening the doors to an international career which has developed rapidly since then. He makes his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker at these concerts.

Yuja Wang has quickly become one of the world’s most sought-after pianists with her impressive virtuosity. Born in Beijing in 1987, she began her piano lessons at the age of six. She received the Gilmore Young Artist Award in 2006 and the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2010. The magazine Musical America named her Artist of the Year in 2017. Yuja Wang made her debut in a concert of the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation in May 2013, with a recital in the Chamber Music Hall.
