Karl-Heinz Duse-Utesch is dead

The Berliner Philharmoniker are saddened to hear of the death of Karl-Heinz Duse-Utesch, principal trombonist of the orchestra for almost the entire Karajan era. Born in Potsdam in 1930, he received his first trombone lessons at the age of 12, and studied at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik, as well as other institutions. Between 1952 and 1958, he played in the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra. In September 1954, following a short stint with the RIAS Symphony Orchestra, Karl-Heinz Duse-Utesch joined the Berliner Philharmoniker. For many years he served as a member of the Council of Five, as managing director of the orchestra’s media activities (1973 to 1986) and as a teacher at the Karajan Academy (1980 to 1991). In 1987, he moved to the position of 2nd trombone, retiring in 1993. Karl-Heinz Duse-Utesch died on 29 December 2023, at the age of 93.
