For the first time in ten years, the Berliner Philharmoniker are to return to the Philharmonie of Munich’s Gasteig. On 18 April and under the direction of Riccardo Muti, the orchestra will play Franz Schubert’s Overture in the Italian style, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Haffner Symphony and the Symphonic Fantasy From Italy by Richard Strauss.
For the orchestra’s last visit in February 2005, it was accompanied by Sir Simon Rattle who conducted Mozart’s last three symphonies. In 1992, the orchestra with his former chief conductor Claudio Abbado made its first appearance in the concert hall of Munich’s cultural and educational centre. Further guest performances with Abbado followed in 1994, 1995 and 1998 which all included one of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies on the programme.
