The Berliner Philharmoniker mourn the death of Gerd Seifert, principal horn of the orchestra from 1964 to 1996. After studying in his native city of Hamburg, he first went to the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker. In addition to his orchestral work, Gerd Seifert was a much sought-after teacher, including at the Berlin University of the Arts and at the Orchestra Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker. In addition, he worked for many years as principal horn in the orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival.
With his technical brilliance and the unsurpassable beauty of his tone, Gerd Seifert was one of the defining musicians of the Herbert von Karajan era. His talent is demonstrated in a recording of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s horn concertos in which he was accompanied by the Berliner Philharmoniker under the direction of Karajan, and which sets standards to this day. Gerd Seifert died on 28 February at the age of 87.
