After their season opening concert, the Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle embark on a short concert tour that takes them to the major European music festivals: the Salzburg Festival, the Lucerne Festival, the George Enescu Festival in Bucharest and the Austrian Grafenegg Festival, where the orchestra will appear for the first time. On the tour, the Philharmoniker will present two contrasting programmes: At all venues on the tour, they will play Benjamin Britten’s Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Fourth Symphony. In Lucerne and Grafenegg, there will be a further concert with compositions from the First Viennese School: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra in E flat major K. 364 and Pasticcio: An imaginary orchestral journey with extracts from works by Joseph Haydn. The soloists are Daischin Kashimoto, principal concertmaster of the Berliner Philharmoniker, and Amihai Grosz, first principal viola with the orchestra.
