European Concert in aid of UNICEF

30 Apr 2020

With their European Concert, the Berliner Philharmoniker and their chief conductor Kirill Petrenko are supporting UNICEF’s emergency assistance for the protection of child refugees. Especially in light of the threat of the coronavirus, children in refugee camps in Syria and Greece are dependent on support. According to UNICEF, relief supplies such as soap, medication and medical care are lacking.

The Berliner Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko will donate their fees to UNICEF’s emergency assistance and also appeal to the public for donations. Christiane Karg, soloist in this program, takes part in this donation. President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the intendant of Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb) Patricia Schlesinger are both supporting this initiative. The German President will open the European Concert, which will be broadcast live at 11am on TV by rbb on Das Erste, with a short speech.

The Berliner Philharmoniker, international UNICEF ambassadors since 2007, celebrate their founding with the European Concert every year on 1 May at a location of cultural significance and at the same time promote the European idea. Due to the corona crisis, this year’s concert will take place under special conditions in an empty Philharmonie Berlin. The Berliner Philharmoniker will also perform in a chamber orchestra formation in order to comply with all necessary distancing rules and hygiene requirements. Among other works, Kirill Petrenko will conduct an arrangement of Gustav Mahler’s Fourth Symphony. In addition to being broadcast on television, the concert will be shown in the Digital Concert Hall of the Berliner Philharmoniker and broadcast on radio by rbbKultur.

Kirill Petrenko and the board members of the orchestra said: “In view of the global challenges posed by the corona crisis, the plight of refugee children is certainly not receiving the attention it deserves. But it is precisely these children who need our support, as they are particularly vulnerable to the dangers of the pandemic. As the Berliner Philharmoniker we not only want to make a financial contribution to UNICEF’s emergency assistance, but also help to ensure that these children are not forgotten. And so we ask music lovers all over the world: please make a donation, too.”
