The Berliner Philharmoniker are much saddened by the death of their former member Rainer Mehne, who died on February 17 at the age of 68. Rainer Mehne was born in Jugenheim in 1947. Following first engagements with the Rundfunkorchester Hannover, and the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (now the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin) he joined the second violins of the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1975. He retired in 2013. Rainer Mehne was a founder of the Philharmonic Piano Quartet and a member of the Philharmonic String Octet. Moreover, he had a particular interest in working with youth orchestras, including the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra and the Young Artist Symphony Orchestra in San Diego.
