19 Feb 2018

The Berliner Philharmoniker are sad to hear of the death of Gustav Zimmermann who was a member of the orchestra’s second violins from 1962 to 1997. Born in Bad Hersfeld in 1932, he studied at the Musikakademie in Kassel, followed by first engagements in Göttingen and Münster. Gustav Zimmermann died on 17 February 2018.

In addition to his musical work, Gustav Zimmermann was an acclaimed researcher in the field of beetles. Furthermore, he was associated with the Berliner Philharmoniker as a keen photographer. His numerous photographs, taken during orchestral rehearsals in particular, depict his Philharmoniker colleagues and their work together with famous conductors and soloists. In this way, Gustav Zimmermann became an important chronicler of the Berliner Philharmoniker, and his works appeared in many recordings and books.
