Death of Elisabeth Furtwängler

05 Mar 2013

The Berliner Philharmoniker are sad to hear of the death of Elisabeth Furtwängler, the widow of Wilhelm Furtwängler, who died at the age of 102 at her home in Clarens near Montreux. She had been married to the former chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker since 1943. Martin Hoffmann, director of the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation, paid tribute to Elisabeth Furtwängler as “an impressive, warm-hearted person and important contemporary witness who did much to keep the memory of Wilhelm Furtwängler alive. Throughout her life, she always had a special affection for the Berliner Philharmoniker, and we will hold her in grateful memory.”
