The Gewandhausorchester Leipzig is celebrating its 275th anniversary – with a special festival programme. The festival, which sees the introduction of the new Gewandhauskapellmeister, Andris Nelsons, opens with a guest performance by the Berliner Philharmoniker on 18 February 2018. The orchestra is travelling to Leipzig accompanied by violinist Michael Barenboim and conductor Vasily Petrenko, who have both just made their debuts in Berlin.
The programme includes Franz Schubert’s Rosamunde Overture, Arnold Schoenberg’s Violin Concerto, and La Valse and Suite No. 2 from the ballet Daphnis et Chloé by Maurice Ravel. The last time the Berliner Philharmoniker made a guest appearance in Leipzig was in 1999 with their chief conductor Claudio Abbado.
