Brahms instead of Liszt in concerts with Kirill Petrenko

17 Jan 2024

For the concerts on February 14, 15 and 16, 2024 in Berlin, on February 19, 2024 in Vienna and on February 23 in Hamburg, Kirill Petrenko and the Berliner Philharmoniker have decided to replace Franz Liszt's symphonic poem "Les Préludes" with the "Tragic Overture" by Johannes Brahms.

Kirill Petrenko, Chief Conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker, said: "I would like to postpone my examination of the symphonic poem "Les Préludes" by Franz Liszt, which I greatly appreciate as a work of art, until a later date. In the current world situation, I think it is inappropriate to perform this music, which was misused during the Nazi era for victory announcements. Together with the orchestra, I have therefore decided to include Johannes Brahms' "Tragic Overture" on the program for the upcoming concerts in Berlin, Vienna and Hamburg instead."
