The Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle are on a week-long tour taking them to Hamburg, Brussels, Luxembourg, Cologne and Vienna. The programme for the tour combines classics of the orchestral repertoire with the musical avant-garde: In addition to Brahms’ hird Symphony and Claude Debussy’s impressionistic composition La Mer, the programme includes dark dreams, a work by the Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas, commissioned by the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation and New York’s Carnegie Hall. It was first performed by the orchestra in Berlin shortly before the tour. This season, Haas, whose microtonal compositional style creates unusual, iridescent soundscapes, is Composer in Residence of the Elbphilharmonie concerts in Hamburg, the first stop of the tour.
