The benefit concert, which was presented by the outgoing Federal President, Joachim Gauck, on 12 March, was not only a musical success, but also served a charitable purpose. Nearly 140,000 euros were raised from ticket sales and donations. The sum goes to UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, whose international ambassador the Berliner Philharmoniker have been since 2007.
“We are delighted about these tremendous results and hope we can provide long-term support for UNICEF,” says Martin Hoffmann, General Manager of the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation. “Our sincere thanks to everyone who participated and helped make the President’s benefit concert possible and, above all, thanks to our partners at UNICEF.”
For 70 years UNICEF has defended the rights of all children throughout the world. The Children’s Fund has made it possible for more children to survive, go to school and be protected from exploitation than ever before. “Despite many advances, today we are still confronted with enormous challenges and crises; countless children are in urgent need of our help,” explained Dr. Jürgen Heraeus, Chairman of UNICEF Germany. “In times like these it is invaluable for us to have a reliable partner like the Berliner Philharmoniker at our side.”
