As the son of a member of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Andreas Blau had an early opportunity to attend the concerts. He was especially taken with the big and round tone produced by Aurèle Nicolet, then the orchestra’s principal flute; and so, at the age of 13, Blau began taking flute lessons from Gertrud Zoeller. He completed his studies at Berlin’s Hochschule (today Universität) der Künste with Karl-Heinz Zoeller and at the renowned Interlochen Music Camp in the USA. He was only 20 when he became a principal flute of the Berliner Philharmoniker. As a soloist he has played under such conductors as Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, Yehudi Menuhin and David Oistrakh. He is a member of the Philharmonic Woodwind Soloists of Berlin as well as the founder and artistic director of the ensemble “The 14 Berlin Flutes”, to which many contemporary composers have dedicated works and which has already recorded four CDs. Since the founding of the Orchestra Academy of the Herbert von Karajan Foundation in 1973, he has passed along his experience as a teacher to new generations of musicians. Many of his pupils have found positions in leading orchestras, for example Jelka Weber and Walter Auer, who now play in the Philharmonic Orchestras of, respectively, Berlin and Vienna. From 1983-85 he taught at Berlin’s Hochschule der Künste. In 2005 he was made an honorary professorship of the Shanghai Conservatory. Andreas Blau is also much sought after as a teacher of master classes in Europe, Asia and the USA, as well as a juror at international competitions. In his free time, the flautist is occupied with literature, computer technology, cooking and bread-baking and enjoys attending museums and exhibitions.
