Concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker
In the first concert of this Saturday subscription series, Herbert Blomstedt will juxtapose Beethoven’s revolutionary “Eroica” with Richard Strauss’s elegiac Metamorphosen. Agitation and drama of a different nature are delivered by Mozart’s popular Symphony No. 40 – to be conducted in his Philharmonic debut by Riccardo Minasi – and Mahler’s “tragic” Sixth Symphony, under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel. By contrast, Beethoven’s Fourth, directed by Andris Nelsons, is notable for its serenity and rhythmic verve. In addition to these famous works, there will also be some symphonic discoveries: Christian Thielemann is committed to early works by Bruckner, principal conductor Kirill Petrenko to Henri Dutilleux’s energetic and virtuosic First Symphony.
