Concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker
Daniel Barenboim returns as guest conductor in the Friday subscription series to lead performances of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Brahms’s Violin Concerto. His soloist: Lisa Batiashvili. Famed for the sensitivity of her playing, she is the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Artist-in-Residence this season. Among her predecessors is baritone Christian Gerhaher, who in this series’ opening concert will be partnered by principal conductor Kirill Petrenko in a performance of Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s apocalyptic Gesangsszene. Celebrated for his Bruckner interpretations, Christian Thielemann will introduce two of the composer’s early symphonies which are not part of the official numbering. Zubin Mehta and Gustavo Dudamel devote themselves to symphonies by Mahler, while a further concert by Kirill Petrenko will include Bartók’s enchanting ballet The Wooden Prince.
