Concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker
This series contributes to the season’s focus on “heroes” with Honegger’s stunning oratorio about Joan of Arc and Shostakovich’s Fourth Symphony, which he was forced to withdraw under political pressure. For these works, Alan Gilbert and Tugan Sokhiev, respectively, will be on the conductor’s rostrum. There are also heroic stories in Smetana’s epic Má Vlast – Kirill Petrenko conducts that cycle as well as a programme including Szymanowski’s sensual First Violin Concerto with soloist Lisa Batiashvili. Riccardo Minasi, a noted exponent of historical performance practice, debuts with a Mozart programme. A high point of the series will be an evening with Martha Argerich and Daniel Barenboim, joining forces in Beethoven’s perennially fresh Second Piano Concerto.
