Concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker
Although they came from very different worlds, Mahler and Shostakovich shared a predilection for unbridled expressive intensity. Zubin Mehta, associated with the Berliner Philharmoniker for over 60 years, performs Mahler’s Fifth, while Yannick Nézet-Séguin tackles Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony. And this series also combines other great figures with famous works. Beethoven symphonies and Strauss tone poems will be juxtaposed twice: in concerts by Herbert Blomstedt and Andris Nelsons. In a concert of Schoenberg, Kirill Petrenko has programmed the delicate yet revolutionary First Chamber Symphony. In Schoenberg’s later monodrama Erwartung, the conductor Eun Sun Kim and the soprano Tamara Wilson both make their Philharmonic debuts.
