Baroque music is prominently represented this season in the Vocal series, which offers singers unlimited opportunities to express feelings and demonstrate their vocal virtuosity.
The countertenors Philippe Jaroussky and Jakub Józef Orliński are able to move audiences profoundly with their singing. With his deep alto voice – assisted by the lively sound of the ensemble Il Pomo d’Oro – Orliński interprets exciting repertoire discoveries from the 17th century. Jaroussky has found a musical soulmate in Thibaut Garcia, who can make his guitar sound like a harpsichord, a lute or even a jazz instrument. Together the musicians set out on a journey through five centuries in their programme À sa guitare. The sole criterion for their repertoire selections was that “every work came from deep emotion”, says the singer.
The Baroque Weekend in February 2024 contributes to the series with a Handel programme and two additional concerts. (Subscribers to the Vocal series receive tickets for the additional concerts at a reduced price). In operas, oratorios and cantatas, Handel’s music explores the entire spectrum of human emotions and is particularly moving when it is devoted to the expression of grief. With her luminous soprano, Mary Bevan makes goddesses, ancient heroines and queens come alive on the stage, thus enhancing this season’s focus on Heroes. She will be accompanied by the Academy of Ancient Music, which has been setting standards on the early music scene for more than 50 years.
The Hugo Wolf song “Auch kleine Dinge können uns entzücken” (Even little things can delight us) is a good motto for the entire genre, since in lieder we encounter miniatures that enable an especially intimate contact between performers and audience. Sabine Devieilhe sings wonderfully atmospheric songs by Wolf, Mozart and Richard Strauss with her agile, radiant and expressive voice and shows how romantic Alban Berg’s youthful compositions were.
The closing concert of the series features a reunion with Asmik Grigorian, an internationally acclaimed operatic singer who impressed listeners at the Philharmonie in the title role of Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta in 2022. During this guest appearance she will introduce both Tchaikovsky and Sergei Rachmaninoff as song composers, demonstrating that the emotional depth of both composers’ large-scale works is equally pervasive in this small form.
