Philharmonic Salon
Series S
For many years the Philharmonic Salon created by Götz Teutsch has shed light on the fascinating connections between music and its literary, historical and social environment. Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker provide superb musical performances for the series. During this season there will be two forays into Mozart’s world and another into German Romanticism.
In Peter Shaffer’s famous play Amadeus, the diplomat Gottfried van Swieten is derided as “Baron Fugue” on account of his passion for Baroque music. In fact, it was van Swieten who familiarized Mozart with the works of Bach and thus performed a great service to music history. In a number of his most important works, Mozart integrated the grace and balance that were hallmarks of his style with the polyphony he learned from his study of Bach. Although van Swieten lives on in Shaffer’s play (and in the film bas ed on it), the pianist-composer Joseph Woelfl, so popular in his lifetime, is hardly remembered at all today. Our performances of some of his chamber works should reaffirm that this incredibly prolific pupil of Leopold Mozart wrote highly attractive music.
Composers as diverse as Wagner, Ravel and Stravinsky were great admirers of the music of Carl Maria von Weber, whose large output has undeservedly been overshadowed by the success of his opera Der Freischütz. The Salon’s season finale will remind us that Weber composed especially beautiful chamber music for the flute and clarinet and that he was also a gifted writer of prose and poetry.
The prominent stage and film actors Udo Samel and Max Simonischek will appear as guests of the series. The legendary director Claus Peymann demonstrates his impressive acting talent as “Baron Fugue”.
