Series K
Chief conductor Kirill Petrenko will appear during two concerts in this series: first, in Mendelssohn’s dramatically moving oratorio Elijah, and second, in a programme with a symphonic poem by Tchaikovsky and two world premieres. Pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, who can thrill a large audience with contemporary music, makes his Philharmonic debut as the soloist in John Adams’s powerful Piano Concerto. Finnish conductor Klaus Mäkelä appears with the orchestra for the first time as well, interpreting symphonies by Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. Mahler’s First Symphony, conducted by Iván Fischer, and a concert led by Alan Gilbert during the Biennale of the Berliner Philharmoniker also contribute substantially to the richness of the subscription programme.
