Mitsuko Uchida returns to the Berliner Philharmoniker after five years to perform Schoenberg’s complex but lyrically intense Piano Concerto. Kirill Petrenko traces the arc of music history in two programmes extending from Beethoven and Brahms to Schoenberg’s multicoloured Variations for Orchestra to Iannis Xenakis and the second half of the 20th century. Isabelle Faust and FrançoisXavier Roth, who both have wide-ranging musical tastes, interpret Bartók’s melodious Second Violin Concerto, while Mikko Franck conducts a Finnish programme that includes music by EsaPekka Salonen, this season’s Composer in Residence.
