The spectrum of Series E ranges from Handel’s oratorio Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno with Baroque specialist Emmanuelle Haïm to the German premiere of an organ concerto by EsaPekka Salonen. Maxim Emelyanychev conducts the Berliner Philharmoniker for the first time in a Mozart programme. Santtu-Matias Rouvali is at the podium for the second time, conducting Prokofiev’s thrilling Fifth Symphony as the main work on the programme; pianist Víkingur Ólafsson makes his debut as soloist with the orchestra. Chief conductor Kirill Petrenko opens this series, conducting three works of the post-war avant-garde; at the close, well-known mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča sings Wagner’s highly emotional Wesendonck-Lieder under honorary conductor Daniel Barenboim.
