Concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker
Two concerts of the Saturday subscription contribute to the season’s focus on the “Lost Generation”. Alexander Zemlinsky was the teacher of Arnold Schoenberg, whose students in turn included the Spanish-born Roberto Gerhard. All three went into exile to escape fascism in Europe. Simon Rattle juxtaposes music by Gerhard with pieces by Dvořák, while Kirill Petrenko presents Lebensreife, the last orchestral work by Dvořák’s son-in-law, Josef Suk. Tugan Sokhiev, Adam Fischer and Zubin Mehta complete the series’ quintet of conductors. Soloistic brilliance is promised by pianists Nikolai Lugansky and András Schiff, Noah Bendix-Balgley (first concertmaster of the Berliner Philharmoniker) and – in Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony conducted by Kirill Petrenko – baritone Christian Gerhaher and soprano Lise Davidsen.
