Organ

On five Sunday mornings, the “Queen of instruments” takes centre stage for the Berliner Philharmonikerʼs organ matinees. The series starts with Sebastian Heindl, a rising star of today’s organists. Wherever the 24-year-old performs, he is met with storms of applause. He will be joined by the brass players of the Berliner Philharmoniker in a programme which includes George Gershwin’s variations on “I Got Rhythm”.

Johann Ludwig Krebs occupies a special position among Johann Sebastian Bach’s pupils. For nine years he was a private pupil and music copyist of the Leipzig Thomaskantor. So what could be more fitting than to present both composers in one concert? Organist Els Biesemans is joined by Philharmoniker oboist Andreas Wittmann to perform the very best of festive Baroque music.

Organ and trumpet are a popular duo in concert life. The silvery sound of the organ blends beautifully with the radiant tone of the trumpet, as will be demonstrated by the French organist Yves Castagnet and Andre Schoch, trumpeter with the Berliner Philharmoniker. The programme includes Harald Genzmer’s tuneful Sonata, the Récits héroïques by the young Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Robin, and finally Thierry Escaich’s captivating Dance Fantasy.

At first glance, the organ and the cello have little in common, but both are masters in the art of instrumental singing. Thomas Ospital, organist of the Church of St. Eustache in Paris, and Bruno Delepelaire, first principal cellist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, present this interesting sound combination in a programme “à la française”. In the final concert of the organ series, the New Yorker Stephen Tharp presents a programme of toccatas. It of course includes Bach’s D minor Toccata and the equally legendary Toccata by Charles-Marie Widor.
