Philharmonic Salon

What connects Giacomo Casanova, Richard Wagner and E. T. A. Hoffmann? All three led unconventional, excessive and adventurous lives, they were among the wittiest minds of their time, and left behind works of artistic genius. Curated by former Berliner Philharmoniker principal cellist Götz Teutsch, the Philharmonic Salon brings the world of these unusual men to life. Participants include ensembles of the Berliner Philharmoniker, the pianist Cordelia Höfer and well-known narrators.

Rufus Beck and the Concerto Melante follow in the footsteps of Giacomo Casanova, the legendary womaniser who united many exciting facets of life in the 18th century: from the priesthood, imprisonment in the lead-roofed chambers in Venice, and social advancement in noble and royal salons, to activities as a tutor, secretary and spy. His memoirs are a fascinating reflection of that time.

The relationship between Richard Wagner and Mathilde Wesendonck is the theme of Brigitte Karner and Heikko Deutschmann together with mezzo-soprano Nadine Weissmann and the Philharmonic String Quintet. The composer, who was wanted by the Dresden authorities for his revolutionary activities, met the married woman in exile in Switzerland, where Mathilde’s husband provided the fugitive with financial support. She became his beloved and muse, who not only inspired him to write his opera Tristan und Isolde, but also provided the poems for his Wesendonck Lieder.

E. T. A. Hoffmann is known to us today primarily as the creator of fantastic and Romantic novels and stories. But he also composed just as passionately as he wrote. Originally a lawyer, E. T. A. Hoffmann worked for several years as a kapellmeister in Bamberg. However, his spiritual home was Berlin, where he was drawn again and again, where he was a regular guest at the renowned restaurant Lutter & Wegner, and where he died in 1822. In the third salon, with German actor Robert Gallinowski as presenter, the Philharmonic String Quartet and harpist Marie-Pierre Langlamet focus on Hoffmann’s musical and literary dual talent and his charming quintet for harp and strings.
