Original sound

A combination of the Philharmoniker sound and historically informed performance practice is the successful concept behind the Berliner Barock Solisten. Founded more than 25 years ago by members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and under the artistic direction of Reinhard Goebel since 2018, they are one of the leading ensembles on the Early music scene. In our Original Sound series, the Berliner Barock Solisten appear together with soprano Julia Lezhneva and mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter to perform Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater plus arias by Handel and Vivaldi. For contemporaries of the Italian composer, this work was a sensation: Pergolesi set Mary’s lament before the cross to music with operatic means, giving the traditional liturgical text a hitherto unknown dramatic quality.

From Italian to Spanish music: Rediscovering Spain is the name of the Accademia del Piacereʼs programme, which brings the sound world of Baroque Spain to life in a brilliant and exciting way. What is typical for the ensemble and its leader, the gambist Fahmi Alqhai, is their fresh, unconventional approach to Early music, their new perspective on the musical material. And with good reason, the Accademia del Piacere is considered one of the best Baroque ensembles in Spain.

The French pianist and harpsichordist Jean Rondeau has played his way to the top of the world with his original, unusual way of making music. He does not necessarily rely on loud sounds. Also a jazz musician, he loves the harpsichord above all for its fragile and delicate sound. In our series, he performs the Goldberg Variations, which Bach composed for the harpsichordist Johann Gottlieb Goldberg – supposedly so that he could entertain his employer during sleepless nights. Jean Rondeau describes the Goldberg Variations as an “ode to silence” – a work in which it is important for the performer to connect with the silence.
