Soprano Julia Lezhneva says her heart belongs to Baroque music, which is particularly fortunate as her bright, clear and flexible voice makes the Russian soprano the ideal performer of 17th and 18th century music. “It’s always about strong feelings! And when I feel it, singing is very easy.” Together with mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter and the Berlin Baroque Soloists, in the first concert of the series Singers, she will perform arias by Handel and Vivaldi as well as a work of sacred music that is full of operatic drama: Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, in which Mary sings a poignant lament at the cross of Jesus.

Handelʼs oratorio L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato explores the philosophical question of how to live a happy life – with cheerfulness or rather with thoughtfulness? Or is there perhaps a happy medium? This rarely performed work is presented by Les Arts Florissants under the direction of William Christie, one of the pioneers of the Early music scene. Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva is actually at home in the world’s foremost opera houses and is considered one of the leading Verdi interpreters. Philharmoniker audiences have already been able to see this for themselves when she gave a poignant portrayal of Desdemona in a new production of Otello at the Berliner Philharmoniker’s 2019 Easter Festival in Baden-Baden. This season we can look forward to a lieder recital with the singer.

Like Julia Lezhneva, the Polish countertenor Jakub Orliński is a great fan of Baroque music. “To me, it means freedom, because composers like Handel leave many decisions to the singer so I can express my personality.” However, he also demonstrates his brilliant command of music from other eras in his programme with works by Purcell, Schubert, Handel, Karłowicz, Naginski and Copland.
