In June 2022, as part of the “Lost Generation” theme, Kirill Petrenko presents three Jewish composers who were directly affected by the murderous regime of the National Socialists: Erwin Schulhoff, Leone Sinigaglia and Alexander Zemlinsky. Zemlinsky had close personal and artistic ties with Gustav Mahler, whose Fourth Symphony is conducted by Semyon Bychkov. From several short pieces, Sir Simon Rattle creates a portrait of Stravinsky, whose ballet Petrushka will be performed under the baton of François-Xavier Roth. Gustavo Gimeno also presents Russian music, while Daniel Barenboim demonstrates Giuseppe Verdi's versatility with an opera overture, an orchestral version of his string quartet, and a sacred work.
