Quartet

The stage is set for the new generation of string quartets! Our chamber music series Quartet presents young ensembles that with drive and creativity give a traditional musical genre a fresh coat of paint. The four members of the Castalian String Quartet have been playing together since 2011 and have been awarded one prize after another thanks to their expressive playing style. Most recently, they were awarded the Young Artist Award by the Royal Philharmonic Society in 2019 for their “thoughtful, intelligent music-making”. For their debut in our series, they bring together Joseph Haydn’s so-called “Quinten” quartet, Beethoven’s late Opus 132, and The Four Quarters, the second contribution to the genre by the English composer Thomas Adès.

Compared to the other ensembles in this series, Quatuor Ébène, founded in 1999, is already a classic. What drives the musicians in this formation? “We are obsessed with the idea of helping the audience enjoy the beauty of the harmony of the moment,” as cellist Raphaël Merlin said in an interview. In their guest performance, they unlock the beauty of string quartets by Haydn, Janáček and Schumann. The four musicians of the vision string quartet are masters of the crossover, and move with skill and ease between the classical string quartet and jazz and pop arrangements. Within a very short time, their concept has caused a sensation on the international string quartet scene. The classical “openers” of this concert are the Slow Movement for string quartet by Webern and Bartók’s Fourth String Quartet, before the vision string quartet move into its jazz and pop tunes. The last concert of this series features the Philharmonic String Quartet, an ensemble that represents the cosmopolitan, versatile and committed young generation of musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker. The aim of the four string players, who will perform works by Erwin Schulhoff, Karl Amadeus Hartmann and Antonín Dvořák, is to apply the Philharmoniker’s sound ideal to chamber music as well, and to pass on their passion for this intimate form of music-making to the audience.
