Karajan Academy

Being a scholarship holder at the Karajan Academy means being prepared for playing music in an orchestra under the very best of conditions. This also includes performing chamber music on the concert stage. Our concert series gives the young members of the Academy the opportunity to develop and perform unusual programmes with leading musical figures.

When Matthias Pintscher conducts, the focus is unsurprisingly on Modern and Contemporary music – after all, as the current director of the Ensemble intercontemporain, he is not only a much sought-after conductor, but also one of the leading composers of his generation. Together with trumpeter Simon Höfele and the Karajan Academy, he presents his Celestial object I for solo trumpet and ensemble, plus works by Clara Iannotta, Lisa Streich and Arnold Schoenberg.

The programme with Renaud Capuçon could be entitled “Mostly Mozart”: the violinist and avid chamber musician plays Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major and conducts his “Haffner Symphony”. It also includes Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen, the composer’s statement of mourning for the destruction of the Second World War.

A concert together with the current Artist in Residence is part of every season for the Karajan Academy. This year brings us violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, whose programme spans the arc from the Baroque to the present day with Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber’s musical battle painting Battalia, Joseph Haydn's “Farewell” Symphony and Márton Illés’ Vont-tér. The programme conducted by Daniel Harding also draws on the interplay between Classical and Contemporary music: in addition to symphonies by Haydn and Mozart, it also includes a work by Jörg Widmann and Benjamin Britten’s Nocturne cycle, with tenor Andrew Staples as the soloist. The last concert in this series is conducted by Nodoka Okisawa, assistant to Kirill Petrenko and on her way to an international conducting career.
