Artist in Residence
Violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja has been appearing with the Berliner Philharmoniker since 2014. And she can rightly claim: “The musicians of the orchestra have since become my friends”. So it was only natural to invite the Moldovan-born artist as Artist in Residence for this season, giving her the opportunity to show all facets of her personality – as a soloist, chamber musician, conductor and critical thinker. Right at the start of her residency, Patricia Kopatchinskaja performs alongside the Berliner Philharmoniker and chief conductor Kirill Petrenko. With the Concerto funebre by Karl Amadeus Hartmann, she presents a sombrely expressive work which is an unfiltered expression of Hartmann’s grief and horror following the outbreak of the Second World War.
Together with the Academy’s scholarship holders, she presents Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber’s Battalia, an impressive musical recreation of a battle, and Joseph Haydnʼs famous “Farewell” Symphony, plus the Violin Concerto by the Hungarian composer Márton Illés, a student of Wolfgang Rihm.
With the JACK Quartet, with whom she performs another chamber concert, Patricia Kopatchinskaja has invited a like-minded ensemble for her residency. The violinist and the quartet share a great passion for contemporary music and its performance at the highest standard.
Patricia Kopatchinskaja’s appearance with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra (which is also part of series O) will focus on Beethoven’s “Pastoral”, a homage to the beauty of nature; the concert also includes works by Schumann and Shostakovich. The programme entitled Les Adieux is dedicated to farewells in a concert which deals with the extinction of species, ultimately posing the probing question: are we killing ourselves off?
If you have any questions, we are more than happy to help!
