The saxophonist and composer Charlie Parker is a legend. A genius at improvisation, with a virtuoso’s technique, and an innovator in rhythm and harmony, he revolutionized the jazz scene. The career of this musician – nicknamed “Bird” and one of the founding fathers of bebop – was brief. Charlie Parker was only 34 when he died, but his music lives on, as the SWR Big Band’s Grammy-winning project Bird Lives has shown. Directed by Magnus Lindgren, with John Beasley at the piano, Parker’s music shines on in a new, orchestral guise.
