He was a pupil of Leopold Mozart, fought a piano duel with Ludwig van Beethoven and made a fortune with his art. Today Josef Woelfl, who enjoyed success as a pianist and composer throughout Europe during his lifetime, is largely forgotten. To mark the 250th anniversary of his birth, the Philharmonic salon remembers the Salzburg native who was close to the Mozart family. Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker, pianist Cordelia Höfer and speaker Udo Samel explore his eventful life through music and literary sources.
