What does György Ligeti’s visionary music have in common with jazz? More than you think. The Hungarian composer was extremely interested in this musical genre and was repeatedly inspired by great jazz pianists such as Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans. Conversely, the sound and motoric energy of his music influence current jazz musicians. To mark the 100th anniversary of Ligeti’s birth, two prominent pianists will pay tribute to the composer: Pierre-Laurent Aimard, a long-time friend of Ligeti and an outstanding performer of his piano music, and Michael Wollny, one of the leading jazz pianists of our time.
