Olivier Messiaen’s monumental Turangalîla-symphonie is a paean to joy and love in all their facets. Inspired by the Tristan legend, it is an opulent work full of sensuousness, ecstasy and spirituality. Messiaen creates his magical soundscapes with an immense orchestra, which includes an imposing percussion section, electronic sounds and a highly virtuosic piano part, interpreted by Cédric Tiberghien at this concert. The Berliner Philharmoniker will be led by Simone Young, chief conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
