The voices of forgotten composers

In the programme for this concert, members of the Berliner Philharmoniker direct their attention towards a generation of composers who were marked by war and Nazi terror, but were also influenced by the dawn of a modern era. Philipp Jarnach’s String Quartet and Erwin Schulhoff’s Bassnachtigall (Bass Nightingale) deal in different ways with the feeling of loneliness. Both composers belonged to the avant-garde during the 1920s. As did Paul Dessau, who later denounced the old Nazi power structure in his Anachronistischer Zug (Anachronistic Train) from 1956. Mauricio Kagel exposed the manipulative techniques of politics in Der Tribun (The Tribune). Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Trio, composed in 1944, seems romantic, but is nevertheless not detached from the events of that time.
