Lang Lang plays Bach’s “Goldberg Variations”

“Be careful not to get too sentimental,” his piano teacher said when Lang Lang played Bach’s Goldberg Variations for her. The pianist has been studying Bach’s challenging work for more than 20 years, drawing inspiration from specialists in Baroque music such as the late Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Andreas Staier, and developing his own personal view of the piece through this exchange. It was not until 2020 that Lang Lang considered himself mature enough to go public with his interpretation – and in doing so fulfilled a lifelong dream.
