October 2020 marks the 30th anniversary of German reunification. “Without the fall of the Wall I definitely would not have become an artist,” recalls the painter Norbert Bisky. “The Wall came down, and everything my life is made up of happened because of that.” The anniversary comes at a very difficult time. Many artists have been particularly hard hit by the consequences of the corona pandemic. In a conversation with Monika Grütters, Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, and TV journalist Gero von Boehm, Norbert Bisky will look back at his artistic development, at 30 years of German unification and what it means to be an artist today. Even now, he spends most of his time in his studio, says Bisky. “But while there, I’m not coming up with any smart-aleck, virus-related socially critical paintings. Rather, with what I miss: the great and small freedoms of the city and all the people.”
