With this concert Tabea Zimmermann and the baritone Christian Gerhaher are fulfilling a heart’s desire: the two musicians have long wanted to perform jointly, but there was a lack of suitable repertoire. Wolfgang Rihm has remedied that by composing a Stabat Mater for viola and baritone which will now be premiered in the scope of this Rihm evening. Jörg Widmann, Wolfgang Rihm’s student of composition and now one of the leading composers of his generation, can be heard as the clarinettist in the ensemble piece Male über Male 2.
