E. T. A. Hoffmann, a central figure of German Romanticism, is an indispensable voice in literary history. The situation is different with Hoffmann the musician, whose compositions are virtually forgotten today. With its juxtaposition of literature and music, our series Philharmonic Salon is thus an ideal platform for paying tribute to the multiple talents of the artistic polymath, who died in Berlin in 1822. The focus of the programme is E. T. A. Hoffmann’s charming but – unjustly – rarely performed Quintet for Harp and Strings.
