On desire and the sufferings of love

As Artist in Residence, Mark Padmore surprises his audience with unusual programmes: in this concert he presents Robert Schumann’s Liederkreis op. 39, a classic of the Romantic lieder genre, plus song cycles by Leoš Janáček and Ryan Wigglesworth. As varied as the compositions are, one theme nevertheless unites them: love as a cause of desire and suffering. The tenor is supported by the mezzo-soprano Allison Cook, members of Vokalconsort Berlin and the composer and pianist Ryan Wigglesworth.
