Celebrating the 450th anniversary of Claudio Monteverdi’s birth

Claudio Monteverdi is regarded as the first major opera composer in the history of music – but it is often overlooked that he was also a great writer of sacred works. For 30 years he worked as maestro di capella at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, one of the important centres of church music. William Christie and Les Arts Florissants present a selection from the rich treasure trove of Monteverdi’s sacred compositions.
